    The Goa police have arrested a man for allegedly killing his wife as he was reportedly upset with her dependence on alcohol, an official said on Friday.

    The incident took place in Fatorda town in South Goa on April 30, he said.

    Accused Krishna Roy, originally from West Bengal, allegedly beat his wife with a stick and a belt over her frequent consumption of alcohol, causing her death, he said.

    Roy, who fled Goa after the alleged crime, was arrested from Kolkata, he added.

    It was immediately not clear who alerted the police about the crime.

    A stampede broke out in the early hours of Saturday as thousands of devotees thronged the narrow lanes leading up to the temple. While six persons died, about 70 were injured.

    Rituals continued at the Sree Lairai Devi temple at Shirgaon in North Goa district with hundreds of devotees arriving on foot despite the temple committee appealing to people to stay away.

    The fact-finding committee constituted by the Goa government is recording the statements of senior officials in charge of crowd management at the event.

    Six devotees were killed and about 70 injured in a stampede that occurred in the early hours of Saturday during the annual Sree Lairai Devi temple festival in Shirgao village in north Goa.

    In the aftermath of the tragic death of six devotees in a stampede, the Goa health department has announced the phase-wise implementation of a “code red” system in hospitals to ensure swift response to emergencies.

    State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said on Sunday that the code red protocol will be implemented in the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and later in district hospitals and the Super Speciality Hospital.

    After visiting the injured devotees at GMCH, Mr Rane said two to three patients are in critical condition. While two among them have responded positively to treatment, close monitoring is needed.

  • 5 Dead After Car Falls Into River On Mumbai-Goa Highway In Maharashtra

    At least five people were killed when a car in which they were travelling lost control and plunged into the Jagbudi River in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district on Monday.

    The unfortunate incident happened in the early hours on the Mumbai-Goa Highway. The occupants were travelling from Mumbai to Devrukh to attend a funeral ceremony.

    While five died in the accident, the driver of the car sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

    The cause of the accident was not known yet. As per preliminary reports, the car lost control, skidded off and fell 100 to 150 feet into the river. The accident took place around 5 a.m.

    Locals and rescue officials moved quickly to the scene and tried to rescue the victims from the sunken car.

    The survivor of the accident was rushed to a local hospital for immediate treatment. The case is being further investigated to identify the root cause of the accident.

    The car was lifted out of the river with cranes, and the police had a tough time retrieving the bodies from the mangled car.

    The locals, who were the first to rush to the spot after hearing the impact sound, immediately informed the police. The identities of the dead were yet to be established.

    In an earlier accident, at least three people were killed and eight others injured in a head-on collision between a tempo traveller and a truck on the Satara-Lonand route near Salpe village in Maharashtra during the intervening night of May 10 and 11. The truck was found to be speeding.

    On May 9, in Maharashtra’s Raigad district, four people were killed and 20 others injured in a road accident. The accident occurred on the Tala-Mandad road when a speeding dumpster hit a state transport bus. The injured were promptly moved to the nearest hospital. The state transport bus suffered massive damage in the accident.

    The airline’s advisory said, “Owing to inclement weather and rainfall in Goa, flight operations may be subject to delays or disruptions.”

    Passengers have been advised to check their flight status before heading to the airport. “We strongly recommend that all customers check the latest flight status prior to leaving for the airport and allocate additional travel time, as weather conditions may also impact local traffic,” IndiGo said.

    The airline also said its customer service teams are available to help travellers. “Our teams remain accessible across all customer service touchpoints and are committed to assisting you at every step of your journey,” it added.

    The Met Department has warned of light to Moderate Rainfall with light thunderstorms and winds gusting to 30-40 is very likely to continue at a few places over North Goa, South Goa today.

    IMD Goa station in-charge, N.P. Kulkarni said, “We have given orange warning for two days and after that we are shifting to yellow warning. For today, we predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall and it will be same tomorrow also. We will keep updating the information. As on today, day 3 onwards we have given yellow warning…Yesterday, we received about 70 mm rainfall over South Goa. Day before yesterday, we received about the same rainfall. These are all the signs of pre-monsoon weather…Hopefully, tomorrow we will get heavy to very heavy rainfall.”
